Skunk Scent Removal

Ellie & Lola had a not so friendly skunk encounter late last night which triggered a midnight test of skunk scent removal remedies.

Most effective: Mix 1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, and one teaspoon of liquid dish soap in a bowl. Apply to affected (non facial) areas, soak for 5 mins., thoroughly rinse.
Warning: Don’t attempt to store the remaining solution — it’s explosive in a closed container. More info here.

Semi effective: Apply tomato juice to affected areas, soak for 5 mins., thoroughly rinse. Repeat if needed.

The only part that still stinks is a small facial area on Lola that received only the tomato juice solution. I didn’t feel comfortably applying the peroxide solution on her face knowing that pouring hydrogen peroxide in a dog’s mouth is an effective way to get them to puke in cases where they’ve ingested something that is life threatening.

I, too, had a midnight opportunity to check skunk odor removal remedies. The dog got sprayed, ran into the house before we were aware of the spraying and rolled on the carpet. Twice. The house reeked. I boiled white vinegar with the windows closed, then opened the windows and doors and got the ceiling fans going. I also sprayed the carpet with vinegar. This morning the dog still smells, but the house barely does. Used the hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and detergent on the dog, but also didn’t do her head. Don’t believe she took a direct hit.
    Hope this helps.

my dog took a direct hit in the face – the skunk was so close to the house it may as well have been right in the house – it was a cool night and the doors were open – my eyes are watering and i can hardly breath – any suggestions short of going to a motel?

Thanks! This combination worked for us. Our white Jack Russell is now pink. Now what about the skunk breath?
